Ethiopia has been embarking an ambitious reform process to ensure the sustainability of its economic growth and development. Among these reforms, education has been a foremost priority. As a starting point for the reforms, the Government accepted that previous attempts at educational reform had yielded mixed results.

Year in Review
On 20th November, Sidama residents gathered peacefully to vote on whether there should be a new Sidama Regional State, within Ethiopia's federal system, or whether Sidama should remain as part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). They voted overwhelmingly – over 98% - in favour of change, so Sidama has officially become Ethiopia’s 10th regional state.

Historic 2020 Elections Represent Hope on the Horizon
Much to the chagrin of most Ethiopians, as well as Ethiopia’s development partners, an attempted coup took place on the 22 June 2019 in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Regional State of Amhara. Five officials were killed in the foiled coup, led by the ringleader Brigadier General Asamenew Tsiege.

On 26 May, Prime Minister Abiy launched the National Green Development Programme – an initiative which will see Ethiopians plant four billion trees across the length and breadth of the nation.
