Ethiopia’s national football team, The Walias, qualified for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following an eight-year absence. A total of 24 teams will take part in the 33rd edition of AFCON, which will be hosted by Cameroon in January 2022. This will be Ethiopia’s 11th appearance at Africa’s most prestigious football tournament.

Ethiopia qualifies for Africa Cup of Nations after eight-year absence
Shura Kitata won the London Marathon on 4th October, producing a devastating sprint finish to depose four-time winner and world-record holder Eliud Kipchoge and become only the third Ethiopian to win the elite men’s title. In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Ashete Bekere and Alemu Megertu finished in 4th and 5th places.

The Virgin Money London Marathon confirmed the full fields for the historic elite men’s and women’s races, scheduled to take place on Sunday 4th October. Ten Ethiopians will participate including Kenenisa Bekele, Tamirat Tola and Roza Dereje.

Full 2020 London Marathon fields confirmed – Ethiopians dominate
The long-awaited head-to-head between Ethiopia’s long-distance great, Kenenisa Bekele, and Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge will take place on Sunday 4th October. There will be no mass participation due to COVID-19 but the elite races for men, women, and wheelchair athletes will take place on an enclosed looped course.

Kenenisa vs Eliud London Marathon showdown confirmed for 4th October
Great Ethiopian Run has announced the postponement of the 2020 TOTAL Great Ethiopian Run International 10km race due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race, which was scheduled to take place on 15th November  2020, is Africa’s biggest road race.

2020 Great Ethiopian Run postponed
Team Ethiopia are set to return to London streets for the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 26th April. Leading the pack will be long-distance legend, Kenenisa Bekele, who will go head to head with Kenya’s Eluid Kipchoge, in what will be one of the most eagerly anticipated races in marathon history.

London are you ready? The Ethiopians are coming!
18-year old Berihu Aregawi and 20-year old Yalemzerf Yehualaw were the men’s and women’s winners at the 2019 Great Ethiopian Run – Africa’s biggest road race - staged in Addis Ababa on 17th November. Around 450 foreign runners took part this year, one of the highest numbers of overseas participants for the race.
