Brighton Festival, the largest annual, curated multi-arts festival in England, is set to get a little taste of Ethiopia thanks to the acclaimed Ethio-British poet, playwright, broadcaster and speaker, Lemn Sissay MBE, who has been selected as this year's Guest Director. The Festival is scheduled to take place from 2 - 24 May and will feature some Ethiopian artists.

Ahead of the official publication date, the Embassy hosted the UK launch of acclaimed Ethio-American author, Maaza Mengiste’s second novel, The Shadow King, in the presence of Ambassador Fesseha and guests. Set in 1935 in Ethiopia, the novel explores female power and casts light on the women soldiers.

On 23rd October 2019, H.E. Ambassador Fesseha Shawel Gebre, was invited to Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty The Queen to formally present his credentials. In a ceremony, which is steeped in tradition and royal pageantry, Ambassador Fesseha was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Asegedech Amberber, and four senior diplomats.

The annual 1-54 Contemporary Art Fair was held at Somerset House in London. This year, Ethiopian representation included Aida Muluneh and Addis Fine Art. Elsewhere at the fair, works by Ethiopian artist, Elias Sime, were also on display.

Ethiopia at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair
The Embassy will host a solo exhibition - I Appreciate You - by London-based artist, Catherine Chambers, for two weeks from 20 September. The majority of works that will be exhibited will be oil portraits of friends in Lalibela, a place that has strongly influenced her work.

Chef Yohanis: Putting Ethiopian Food on the Culinary Map
"Ethiopia: Recipes and traditions from the Horn of Africa", by renowned Ethiopian chef, Yohanis Gebreyesus, has been shortlisted for the 2019 Guild of Food Writers Award. In honour of the occasion and to celebrate Ethiopia's unique cuisine and culture, the Embassy will host a book signing and tasting event on June 29.

Chef Yohanis’ debut cookbook shortlisted for Guild of Food Writers Award + UK Tour
The London launch of the acclaimed photography book, Vintage Addis Ababa, took place at the Ethiopian Embassy in London on 30th May, in the presence of Ethiopian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Mr Fesseha Shawel Gebre, one of the book’s editors, Philip Schütz, and more than a hundred guests.
