Tsgabu Grmay launches new cycling tour company in Ethiopia
Ethiopia’s world-class cyclist and reigning national time-trial champion, Tsgabu Grma, has launched a new cycling tour company based in Ethiopia offering tours for international cycling enthusiasts.
The new company known as “Ethio Cycling Holidays” brings together a strong team of current and former cyclists hoping to introduce more cyclists to the fantastic opportunities for road cycling in Ethiopia.
“Opening this cycling company has been one of my long-held dreams,” said Tsgabu speaking from his home town of Mekelle, the starting point for many of the tours.
“Over the past two years, we have worked hard to get everything in place to be able to give tourists a great experience and fantastic support on their rides. With more and more people looking for new places to ride, this is the perfect time for us to launch.”
Tsgabu has also announced plans for supporting young Ethiopian cyclists through the new company. “We have to look to the future. I have had so many great opportunities to help me progress in the sport, and now I want to share my experiences with other young Ethiopian riders and give opportunities to them.” 30% of the company’s profits will go towards this work.
Tsgabu has joined forces with two former Olympians to launch the company. One of those is British Olympic distance runner Richard Nerurkar who has spent many years working in Ethiopia and has spent much of the past two years cycling the routes that will be used for the tours. The other is Ethiopian Olympic cyclist Alemayehu Sitotaw, who like Tsgabu has won many national cycling titles, and has retained close connections with Ethiopia’s cycling community since retiring from competition thirty years ago.
Opportunities for road cycling in Ethiopia have opened up with the construction of new roads, some of which pass through spectacular mountain scenery.
“Even though it can be a bit hard cycling on the hills here, the roads and scenery are fantastic,” says Tsgabu about the roads in Tigray where he typically prepares for his European races including this year’s Vuelta a Espana which is in Tsgabu’s sights this year.
