Message from the Deputy Head of Mission on the first filling of the GERD
To all Ethiopians, at home and abroad, and to all friends and partners of Ethiopia
We offer our sincere thanks for your commitment and dedication in supporting Ethiopia’s principled stand over the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
On Tuesday, 21st July 2020, Ethiopia reached a historic milestone – the completion of the preliminary phase of filling the GERD reservoir! Facilitated by an exceptionally heavy rainy season, the amount of water required for the first year has been met (4.9 billion cubic metres) without causing any harm to the downstream countries.
Your support has been instrumental in the progress made so far.
Ethiopia has consistently supported the policy of cooperation and mutual development for the Nile River Basin.
Ethiopia’s people and government remain committed to the principles of all-inclusive development which benefits all, both in the region and beyond.
Ethiopia is looking forward, with confidence, to finalising the agreements on any remaining technical issues. It expects that these will be achieved in the near future.
Together, we can prosper!
I stand for an equitable share of the Nile waters.
Ababi Demissie (Amb.)
Deputy Head of Mission
Embassy of Ethiopia, London
