EPRDF elects Dr Abiy Ahmed as new leader
The Council of Ethiopia’s ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), elected Dr Abiy Ahmed as its new chairperson late yesterday (27 March). The incumbent Deputy Chairperson, Demeke Mekonnen, retains his post.
Dr Abiy is the chairperson of the Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Organisation (OPDO), one of the four constituent parties of the EPRDF coalition.
He previously served as Minister of Science and Technology, Director General of the Federal Science and Technology Centre of Excellence, and Deputy Director of the Information Network Security Agency (INSA).
Dr Abiy has a degree in Computer Engineering, an MA in Transformational Leadership and Change, an MBA in Management and Leadership and a PhD in Peace and Security.
He has also served as head of the Urban Development and Housing Bureau of the Oromia regional state with the rank of Deputy Chief Administrator.
