Message from the Ambassador
On behalf of myself, diplomats, and staff members at the Ethiopian Embassy in London, I would like to extend my very best wishes for a peaceful, prosperous and healthy New Year, 2022. And with Genna, Ethiopian Christmas, around the corner, Melkam Genna to the Ethiopian community and friends of Ethiopia in the United Kingdom.
Despite 2021 being one of the most challenging for many Ethiopians with the conflict in the Tigray region, the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the effects of climate change, we must also look back on 2021 with the knowledge that brighter days are ahead of us.
I was truly inspired by the efforts of Ethiopians, from all walks of life, across the United Kingdom and the world, who came together in unity and stood in solidarity with their compatriots at home, raising vital funds to go towards supporting all those who have been affected by the conflict in Northern Ethiopia. Thousands of pounds have also been raised to go towards completing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam – a people’s project that aspires to see 65 million Ethiopians get access to electricity. The people and government of Ethiopia are extremely grateful for your kind generosity and support.
2021 saw millions of Ethiopians exercise their democratic right by casting their ballots in the first free and fair elections in years. Since 2018, the current administration has embarked on a path of democratisation with a commitment to widening the political space and enabling a conducive environment for democratic and informed discourse. The House of People’s Representatives has also approved a bill to establish a National Dialogue Commission by a majority vote. The establishment of the commission will pave the way for national consensus and maintain the integrity of the country.
Over the last three years, Ethiopia has embarked on an ambitious roadmap of economic reforms aimed at energising private sector growth, attracting greater FDI, and stimulating the country’s nascent knowledge economy. These home-grown reforms have already had a significant impact on the business and investment environment in Ethiopia – an environment, which we believe is more fertile than ever for foreign investment. In fact, 2021 saw Vodafone Group being awarded the first private telecoms license in Ethiopia’s history as part of the Global Partnership for Ethiopia consortium bid. This historic agreement represented the largest FDI into Ethiopia to date. It is my hope that this only represents the beginning of what is to come in the months and years ahead.
The year 2021 has shown us that although our challenges are great, each of one us, as Ethiopians, has the courage and determination to rise up and meet them, and that we should look forward to a future of peace, prosperity, unity, and opportunity.
So, let us begin this new year by recommitting ourselves to the values of humanism, selflessness, and tolerance that define us as Ethiopians. By coming together, we will always overcome whatever challenges we face.
Together, we can build a brighter tomorrow. A more inclusive, democratic, and prosperous Ethiopia for ourselves and the generations to come. Let us come together and show the world that the name Ethiopia is synonymous with determination, perseverance, and hope.
Ethiopia shall, indeed, prevail.
