The Government of Ethiopia Remains Committed for a Peaceful Resolution of the Conflict in the Northern Part of Ethiopia
It is to be recalled that the Government of Ethiopia has established a committee to negotiate with the TPLF and end the conflict once and for all. The Committee of seven led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, began discharging its responsibilities as it formally set out a couple of weeks ago the rule of conduct and procedures for negotiations.
As has been clarified before, the government determined the Peace process to be within the bounds of these three principles. i.e., 1) respecting the constitutional order, 2) respecting fundamental national interest, and 3) recognising the role of the African Union as the facilitator of the process. The government’s insistence on the leadership of the African Union via its High-Representative to the Horn of Africa, Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, is a reiteration of its firm stance on the significance of “African Solutions to African Problems”.
Over the previous week, the government briefed visiting Special Envoys of the UN, EU and USA including seating ambassadors of the US, UK, France, Germany, and Italy on Ethiopia’s expressed positions in resolving the conflict. The government expressed its readiness to talk anytime, anywhere and without any preconditions.
Conversely, the TPLF continues to list conditions and unfounded allegations to derail the peace process. It has escalated hostile rhetoric and vowed to launch an attack on the country unless its demands are fully met, which demonstrates the TPLF’s lack of commitment to peace talks.
