Prime Minister’s statement on protests in Oromia region of Ethiopia
In a statement following protests in the Oromia Region on 23rd October, the Prime Minister expressed his profound sorrow at the loss of lives and destruction of property, including churches and mosques. He said unless Ethiopians cooperate and unite, the way forward would be frightening and full of challenges.
Despite the heart-breaking situation, Ethiopians have shown their greatness by providing food and shelter for displaced people, the Prime Minister said. Muslims have been witnessed protecting churches from damage, and Christians protecting Mosques, one ethnic group protecting the other, and elders and religious leaders working tirelessly to ensure peace and security in their community. There are citizens who are not afraid of these reckless actions but hopeful and determined to work for the future of Ethiopia.
The Prime Minister stressed that his government is always ready to ensure the rule of law and bring those responsible to justice. He said, “it is known why this has happened and no one will stop us from the journey we have embarked upon.”
