Triumphant athletes rewarded by Ethiopian President

 

The Ethiopian Government has rewarded the athletic squad that was sent to the 10th World Athletics Championship in Helskinki for the fantastic results they achieved. In a ceremony at the National Palace on 19th August, conducted in the presence of President Girma Wolde Giorgis, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, his wife Azeb Mesfin, Ministers and other senior government officials, 690,000 Birr was distributed between the victorious squad that put Ethiopia third in the world medal take-home.

Each of the athletics that won a Gold Medal in the Championship was awarded 35,000 Birr, while Silver and Bronze Medals were rewarded with 25,000 and 20,000 Birr respectively. Other athletes who took part, also received financial rewards, as did the coaches and team physicians.

After the awards ceremony, President Girma said the government had “deep respect for those heroic athletes who have scored remarkable achievements in the World Championship.”

The President added that the government would continue to further support sporting activities, particularly athletics, to encourage the participation of young Ethiopians and ensure the country’s reputation for victorious athletes continues.

He also called for the nation to participate in a greater number of event categories so that even more victories would be achieved in the coming Ethiopian new year.
