PM stresses release of CUD leaders following their plea for pardon vital for enhancing democratization process

 (20July 2007)

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi expressed that the release of the CUD leaders convicted of overthrowing the government through violence following the May 2005 election upon their plea for pardon is vital for further enhancing the democratic order in the country.

In a press briefing the Prime Minister gave in his office , he said that the judicial process has clearly demonstrated that the supremacy of law has been ensured in the country and the constitution is a guarantee for ensuring the right of citizens.

The conclusion of the ruling of the leadership of CUD without the interference of any party also proves the supremacy of law, Meles said adding that it would also be a lesson for other political parties in the country to advance their agenda only through the legal route.

Following the verdict, the convicts asked the government and the people for pardon on the basis of the law of the land and they were granted the pardon by the FDRE President, he indicated.

The leaders of CUD who have been freed should live up to the expectations of public and respect the constitution, Meles noted, further adding that they have the right to promote their political agenda legally.

The fact that the process of pardoning has been finalized without the interference of foreign forces indicates the capacity of the country in resolving its own problems by itself.

The efforts exerted by local elders would also be a lesson not only to citizens of the country but also to other nations, the premier underscored. (ENDS)
