Ethiopian Dibaba storms to historic double
Ethiopian world 10,000 metres winner Tirunesh Dibaba successfully defended her 5,000metres title, becoming the first woman to clinch the historic double. Tirunesh also set a new championship record when she finished in 14 minutes and 38.59 seconds, which was held at Helsinki on Saturday 13th August.
Tirunesh’s victory was complimented by team mates Meseret Defar (and elder sister) Ejegayehu Dibaba taking the silver and bronze medals in 14:39.54 and 14:42.47 respectively, followed by Meselech Melkamu – sealing the second one-two-three-four victory in history!
“I wanted to win both races and I did,” said Dibaba. “I’m planning to do that next time again. Doing top four is the best feeling that you can hope for. It's a dream come true and I'm very happy."
Back on 6th August, Tirunesh led home an Ethiopian clean sweep in the women’s 10,000 metres, with Berhane Adere taking the silver and Ejegayehy completing the lead trio.
