Camel Train follows Salt Route on Radio 4
BBC Radio 4 will be broadcasting Camel Train, which follows Matthew Parris, political commentator for The Times newspaper and former MP, as he joins traders and their camels along the ancient salt route from the Danakil Desert to the Ethiopia Highlands.
The programme looks at the Danakil Depression in northern Ethiopia, one of the lowest, hottest places on the surface of the Earth, and the thousands of traders from the Ethiopian Highlands who make the arduous journey each year to cut blocks of salt from the ground and transport it back using methods unchanged for at least 2000 years.
Camel Train goes out on BBC Radio 4 (92 to 95 FM and 198 LW) at 11:00am on Friday 30th June 2006.
